成人直播鈥檚 Rachel Naida gives diabetes management tips in 鈥楯ournal Tribune鈥
Rachel Naida, Pharm.D. '13, assistant clinical professor in the College of Pharmacy, has been published in the October 29 issue of the Journal Tribune. In the piece, Naida outlines strategies for diabetes management during the winter and holiday season.
鈥淢ultiple studies have demonstrated a relationship between the change in seasons and an effect on blood sugar control in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, in all age groups, sexes and races,鈥 wrote Naida. 鈥淭hese studies most strongly demonstrate that the results of patients鈥 hemoglobin A1C (HgA1C), a test that measures how well controlled your sugars are over a three-month time period, are the highest in the winter and the lowest in the warmer months.鈥 This research supports the idea that people with diabetes experience less control of their blood sugars in the winter months.
To maintain control of diabetes during the winter, Naida recommends keeping up with exercise, eating a balanced diet and consistently testing blood sugar.
