Brian Duff, Ph.D., associate professor and chair in the Department of Political Science, was interviewed for a September 25 article in the Portland Press Herald, titled 鈥淔or the first time, it looks like Maine鈥檚 electoral votes will be split.鈥

The article predicts that Maine鈥檚 four electoral votes in the upcoming presidential election will be split between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump, which would mark the first time in history that the state鈥檚 votes are divided.  Clinton is leading in the southern 1st District, while Trump is favored in the northern 2nd District.

Duff theorized that the 2nd District support of Trump echoes that region鈥檚 support of Maine Governor Paul LePage 鈥 another outspoken Republican. Duff said of LePage, 鈥淗e is one of the most unusual governors in the nation and now it seems they are going to really change their habits in voting in the presidential election and it tells you something is happening in politics that is really resonating up there. It鈥檚 reflecting what we鈥檝e noticed elsewhere, which is that white people without a college education, especially men, are really having a positive reaction to the Trump campaign.鈥
